Making the energy & climate transition work for you.
OUR FOUNDERS

Gareth Veal
CEng PhD MSc MEI CEPH (Passivhaus consultant) ESOS Lead Assessor
gareth.veal@efficiencywise.co.uk
07896 713 058
Gareth has 25 years of experience developing and delivering energy, climate & net zero strategies for:
-Multinationals, e.g. Sainsbury’s, Shell, Airbus, CBRE, Balfour Beatty.
-SMEs, e.g. in the hospitality and manufacturing sectors.
-Public sector organisations, e.g. the NHS and local authorities.
-Third sector organisations, such as Business Improvement Districts and NGOs.
Gareth is a Chartered Engineer, an ESOS lead Assessor and a Chartered Energy Manager. He is also a Certified Passivhaus consultant and ‘walks the talk’ in that he is currently undertaking an EnerPHit (Passivhaus version of retrofit) at home.
Gareth has the ability to span energy and climate conversation across many varied audiences, for example having worked on strategy in Shell's Group Climate team in the Hague, and with the Head of Energy for Sainsbury's. His strategy and organisational change work is informed by his MSc in Management from the University of Bath, which led into a PhD examining the design and operation of Carbon Markets, and later to a Prize Fellowship in Sustainability within the School of Management.
His early career experience in manufacturing and engineering built a good grounding in lean and six sigma methodologies. During this time he worked within and developed 9,001 systems as a route to the operational excellence which enables energy and GHG savings. He later built on this experience as the 'Head of Compliance and Sustainability' for a large NHS Foundation Trust, working within the Estates Leadership team. In this role he managed a £3m energy, water and waste budget and used his work on the steam boilerhouse and CHP to successfully apply for CEng and CEM status with the Energy Institute. More recently, Gareth has become a certified Passivhaus Consultant, working on the certification of large scale newbuild and retrofit projects in the domestic and commercial sectors.
Over the past ten years Gareth has used his experience to develop and deliver standard cohort and bespoke in-house training on energy management, energy procurement and the climate / net zero transition for the Energy Institute, The Institute of Sustainability & Environmental Professionals (ISEP), and Make UK- the trade association for UK manufacturing.
Gareth is happy in the boardroom, the design office, the plant room, and on the shop floor. He enjoys connecting these contexts and his passion is in developing a case for change that can be appreciated by the finance director, but which is also credible and passes muster with the chief engineer and the operational teams.

OUR PLEDGE
We add value for our customers, guided by our commitment to offer:
1. EXPERT SUPPORT from boardroom, to design office, to plantroom and shopfloor
We combine engineering expertise with strategic and commercial insight to help organisations see the bigger picture and turn ambition into action. We're as comfortable developing and presenting a business case to the finance director as we are discussing glazing ratios and air change rates with a Passivhaus Designer. This ability to straddle a wide range of audiences allows us to help different parts of the organisation connect and unlock energy savings and GHG reductions. We want to help you understand the full range of options available and make an informed decision that best fits your ambitions.
2. A TRUSTED PARTNER focussed upon your development and success
We generally aim to help you make progress, rather than to do the work for you at arm's length. We value transparency and aim to build your internal knowledge and systems. For example, in supporting your compliance with ESOS & TM44 inspections, we'd far prefer to help you work towards ISO 50,001 certification- delivering long term value in addition to regulatory compliance. This approach offers many valuable opportunities beyond simply hiring us to provide an ESOS / TM44 compliance report.
3. LIFELONG LEARNING for ourselves and for you
The energy & climate transition is constantly evolving, and so are we. We pass on our knowledge through training, mentoring and expert support. This can be delivered direct to your organisation, or through partners that we develop and deliver training courses for; such as the Energy Institute (EI), The Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP), and Make UK- the trade association for UK manufacturing. Our aim is to help you build the knowledge, confidence and capability to succeed.
4. COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION including working at risk, or for a share of savings
We're confident that we can add value and have in many cases put our money where our mouth is. We are happy to partner and work at risk to jointly develop opportunities that help accelerate the energy transition and net zero future. We've also had good success securing funding when developing collaborative projects. If you have an idea that needs to find a funding route, then we'd be keen to help you explore this. We have a great network and can often add the insight or connection that tips an idea from concept to action.
5. ACTION and results
Progress on energy and climate change comes from delivery. We focus on practical actions that reduce costs, improve performance and support long-term net zero goals. Whether identifying quick wins, or shaping long-term plans, we help organisations turn good intentions into measurable results.
